Internal citations

EVERYTIME you use information from another source, you MUST cite it.

If you paraphrase (put into your own words), it still must be cited.
If you use a direct quote, must be in " " and still must be cited.

To cite, follow these steps.

Step 1
Look at the MLA citation. Use what is listed first. List the last name of the author. If the author is an organization, list the name of the organization. If the name of the article is first, put the name of the article in " ".
Step 2
List the page number you are referencing, if possible. This will only apply to articles that also appear in print.
Step 3
Enclose your citation in parentheses. For example: (Smith 11). If no author name is given, you may use the title of the web page in quotation marks. For example: ("10 Ways to Fish" 11). If the web page or article is not paginated, omit this information from your citation. It is not necessary to give a paragraph number.
Step 4
Position your citation directly after the quoted or paraphrased passage. For example: One website suggests that the best way to catch a trout is to "tug the line every six to eight seconds" ("10 Ways to Fish" 11).

Rough draft due Monday at the beginning--TWO copies already printed when you come to class.

Good/Bad examples: The Crisis

The question was: Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the structure of the speech, including whether the structure makes points clear, convincing and engaging.

I gave this a 2/15:
"It is very effective because of the use of a lot of loaded language which is very persuasive."

"Yes, it is very convincing. He uses strong words, and makes his arguments clear."

I gave this a 8/15:
"The structure of the speech is clear and easy to follow because it flows from one point to the next. This also makes the speech convincing because its points are clear and strong."

"In his speech he makes things clear with the vivid vocabulary, he made it convincing with the logical standpoint he had, and made it engaging with the emotional factor telling everyone enough is enough."

I gave these a 12/15:
"Thomas Paine used some metaphors that made his meaning clear, which was effective. He convinced people by his words about victory and defeat. That even made me want to fight, centuries later. His vivid words with strong connotations, along with various metaphors, were very effective because they left lingering visuals"

"The effectiveness of the structure is good because he uses rhetorical questions, emotional, logical and authoritative appeals, and he also uses parallelism throughout the story which made the passage clear to understand."

Wednesday, 9.3: To My Dear and Loving Husband

Directions from class today:

Your homework: write a parody poem modeled after “To my Dear and Loving Husband”on page 112 of our textbook

Your parody poem can be written about ANYTHING--really, anything you want.

To my Dear and Loving Golf Clubs”

“To my Dear and Loving Flaming Hot Cheeto’s (my all-time favorite)

“To my Dear and Loving Cell Phone”

“To my Dear and Loving Boyfriend”

Your poem should be 12 lines long, and include a hyperbole. You should try to model it as best you can after the poem. Poem needs to have a consistent rhyme scheme--AB, AA BB, ABC, whatever. Poem needs to have parallelism.

Poem is due at the beginning of the hour on Thursday. Extra credit for anyone who volunteers to present. Creativity is also part of the grade.
My example poem:

TO MY DEAR AND LOVING ROYALS
If ever you were to continue winning, then surely this year,

If ever you  stop winning, then my heart is filled with fear.

If ever a playoff appearance is on our minds,

We need you to get there, for all of mankind!

We have been in a playoff drought since the dinosaur days,

Please don’t let this just be a phase!

Kansas City fans have an suffered enough,

We’ve endured too many years that were tough.

You’ve made us think the playoffs are next,

If you don’t make it, we will surely be vexed.

Then while we live, please make this dream come true.
Then when we live no more, we can have this to carry us through
