Thursday, 3.5--Writing Prompt today

Directions:

1. Only 30 minutes from start to finish.
2. Use your own paper.
3. Use the writing prompt paper to take 3-4 minutes to annotate the prompt, write a scratch outline, and get your thoughts together.
3. DO NOT write your name on your paper--put your number at the top of the paper. I'll write your number down.

Reminders:
1. It doesn't matter what side you take
2. You don't have to follow the 5 paragraph essay format
3. You MUST have a solid claim (thesis) where you state your opinion clearly
4. Use examples, reasons, stories, etc. to back up your points

Peer Editing!

Rough Draft Day!

Details for Peer Editing:
  • Join a group if you aren't already in one.
  • Share your paper through Google Docs with each other
  • Run through this checklist with every paper in your group.

1. Read and make corrections for spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc.

2. Highlight thesis/claim. Was it clear and supported in paper? Make a comment about what they can improve

3. Intro--does it introduce book, author, them, and their story? Does it include a quote?  What can make the intro stronger? Make a comment about any of these things.

4.  Body Paragraphs--
    Make comments about the flow and structure of the story
    What is effective? Be specific!
    What is ineffective? Be specific!

5. Conclusion--does it tie back around to Huck and make a connection between them and Huck? Does it have a quote? Make a comment about what can make their conclusion stronger and what you liked.

6. Overall--
    Make a comment about one thing you liked overall. BE SPECIFIC
    Make a comment about one thing that would make it better. BE SPECIFIC.

Today, we're going to start working on the Huck Finn paper by looking for quotes and beginning to organize. I've divided you into groups. EACH group member needs to find a quote that shows the theme assigned. Make sure you include each chapter breakdown. Copy the text directly onto your Padlet, and make sure you include page numbers AND your name.

Friday, 1.30: Quiz and Work Time

Today, quiz over 5-7.

Next, I want you to start making a plan for your theme project. You've decided WHAT you are doing, now it's time to start figure out HOW.

Go to Google Classroom and re-open that assignment from Tuesday, the Huck Finn Theme Tracker. If you turned it in, it has been "returned" to you. I made a comment next to #6, your project idea.

Work on page four--look at the five objectives, and figure out HOW your project will reach these objectives. You don't have to pick the themes yet. I just want you to start making a plan so when you have work time next week, you can get started.

This document is DUE end of the hour...I want to see the plans you have made. I will make comments and return to you.

TODAY: We are watching a slave narrative video in order to prepare us for reading Huck Finn, to get used to the dialect, and to see the first-hand effects of slavery. Reflection sheet due at end of hour. We won't get finished with the video, but will watch as much as we can.

As we read, keep in mind the characteristics of realism and regionalism and keep a running list on a piece of paper to use when you write the essay next week. I would look for AT LEAST three different characteristic examples. You can use these notes next week.
